Dutch · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "wie" in Dutch?

vee — soft lip-teeth w and a long "ee." Nothing like the English "we" or "why."

wie /ʋi/

One beat carrying the question's melodic peak, since question words in Dutch are inherently prominent. With no closing consonant, the vowel is fully exposed — there is nowhere to hide an approximation, which makes this a good test of your "ie."

Sound it out

w Bottom lip approaching the upper teeth with light contact. English rounds the lips for this letter and German turns it into a full v; Dutch does neither.
ie With no consonant closing the word, this vowel is fully exposed. Tongue high and forward, held.

"Wie is die vrouw?" opens with the question word and follows with the verb, then the demonstrative and the noun. "Die" here also contains the long "ee," so the sentence gives you the same vowel twice with different consonants around it.

Where English speakers slip

The English "we" is close in meaning-adjacent territory and supplies a rounded w; "why" supplies the wrong vowel entirely. Dutch needs a labiodental w and a plain "ee." Beginners also confuse "wie" (who) with "wij" (we) in listening, since the consonant is identical and only the vowel differs — one steady, one gliding.
