Korean · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "다리" in Korean?

da-ri. A quiet word-initial ㄷ, an open ㅏ, and a single tap onto a tight 'ee'.

다리 /ta.ɾi/

dari

Two level syllables, and the last word in the course is one of the simplest: a plain stop, a tap and two clean vowels, with nothing tensed, aspirated or clustered anywhere in it.

Sound it out

da The plain ㄷ opening the word, so quiet that many learners hear it as a t, over a wide open ㅏ.
ri An intervocalic ㄹ, flicked once against the ridge, then a pure 'ee'.

Hear it in a sentence

저 다리를 건너세요.

Jeo darireul geonneoseyo.

Cross that bridge.

저 다리를 건너세요 attaches the object particle to a vowel-final noun, and 건너세요 runs its ㄴ straight into the following ㄴ, giving a held double nasal in the middle of the verb.

Where English speakers slip

The American r is the last recurring error to fix, and here it is fully exposed because nothing else in the word competes for attention -- a Korean tap is one contact and it is over. A full English d at the front is the other, when word-initial ㄷ should be quiet enough to pass for a t.
