Korean · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "경찰" in Korean?

gyeong-chal. A y-glide onto the flat ㅓ, a held nasal, and then an aspirated ㅊ with a real puff.

경찰 /kjʌŋ.tɕʰal/

gyeongchal

Two beats. A nasal does not tense a following consonant and this one is aspirated regardless, so the seam is completely uneventful and the word sounds exactly as its parts predict.

Sound it out

gyeong An unaspirated ㄱ running into a y-glide and the unrounded ㅓ, closed by a nasal ㅇ held as resonance.
chal The breathy affricate ㅊ, with genuine breath, over an open ㅏ, closed by a clear forward ㄹ.

Hear it in a sentence

경찰을 불러 주세요.

Gyeongchareul bulleo juseyo.

Please call the police.

경찰을 불러 주세요 attaches 을, so the ㄹ taps forward and the noun becomes gyeong-cha-reul. Then 불러 gives you a geminate l, since the ㄹ of 불 and the ㄹ of 러 merge into one long lateral.

Where English speakers slip

Putting a g after 경 is the standard nasal error and under-aspirating the ㅊ is the other, and together they produce something that shares little with the Korean. The dark l at the end is the third, and it pulls the open vowel backward.
