Korean · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "지갑" in Korean?

ji-gap. A soft ㅈ, a ㄱ that voices between vowels, and a ㅂ that closes the word without releasing.

지갑 /tɕi.gap̚/

jigap

Two syllables, the second clipped by its lip closure. Every consonant in the word comes from the plain series, so the only strong articulation anywhere is the silence at the end.

Sound it out

ji Plain ㅈ at the front, quiet and unaspirated, over a tight 'ee'.
gap ㄱ picking up voicing between vowels into a real g, an open ㅏ, and an unreleased ㅂ. The lips close and the word ends.

Hear it in a sentence

지갑이 가방 안에 있어요.

Jigabi gabang ane isseoyo.

The wallet is in the bag.

지갑이 가방 안에 있어요 attaches the subject particle, so the trapped ㅂ moves forward and voices, giving ji-ga-bi. Then 가방 안에 shows a nasal carrying into a bare vowel with nothing inserted between them.

Where English speakers slip

An audible release on the final p is the standing batchim error and aspirating the initial ㅈ is the plain-series one, and both make the word sound harder than it is. The middle ㄱ then needs to be genuinely soft, since hardening it into a k gives the word a spelled-out quality.
