Korean · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "목소리" in Korean?

mok-sso-ri. The unreleased ㄱ of 목 tenses the following ㅅ into ㅆ, so the middle of the word is harder than it looks.

목소리 /mok̚.s͈o.ɾi/

moksori

Three beats with a silent closure after the first. The compound is 목 plus 소리, and the tensing happens exactly at the seam, which is where Korean compounds reliably produce this change.

Sound it out

mok A lip-shut m over a rounded ㅗ, closed by an unreleased ㄱ.
sso The plain ㅅ tenses to ㅆ because of that stop: throat locked, hiss strong, no breathiness. Then another rounded ㅗ.
ri A tapped ㄹ onto a tight 'ee', over almost before it starts.

Hear it in a sentence

그분은 목소리가 좋으세요 attaches the subject particle to a vowel-final noun and finishes with 좋으세요, where the ㅎ of 좋 disappears between vowels and the word runs jo-eu-se-yo.

Where English speakers slip

Saying 'mok-so-ri' with a soft s is the standard miss, because nothing in the romanization signals the tensing -- squeeze the throat. Releasing the ㄱ is the second habit, and the third is an American r at the end, which slows down the syllable that should be quickest in the word.
