Korean · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "옷" in Korean?

ot. One clipped syllable: a bare rounded ㅗ and a ㅅ realized as an unreleased t.

옷 /ot̚/

ot

One syllable, cut off by its own stop. As with 것 and 셋, the ㅅ is silent alone and returns the moment a vowel follows, so the bare word and the particled form differ more than the spelling suggests.

Sound it out

o A rounded ㅗ opening the word on the voice, with no consonant in front and no glottal catch.
t The written ㅅ neutralized to an unreleased [t̚]. No hiss survives in final position, and nothing is released.

Hear it in a sentence

이 옷이 아주 예뻐요.

I osi aju yeppeoyo.

These clothes are very pretty.

이 옷이 아주 예뻐요 restores the ㅅ: with the subject particle attached it resyllabifies forward and comes back as a real s, giving o-shi -- and because the vowel is ㅣ, it palatalizes too. Then 예뻐요 opens on a tensed ㅃ.

Where English speakers slip

Letting the final consonant go with an audible burst -- the t is the standing error with stop batchims. Then, in 옷이, learners produce a plain s rather than the palatalized sh the ㅣ demands. And a glottal stop before the initial vowel gives the word a clipped start it should not have.
