Korean · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "여권" in Korean?

yeo-kkwon. The plain ㄱ tenses to ㄲ at the compound seam, so the middle consonant is hard even though the romanization writes a g.

여권 /jʌ.k͈wʌn/

yeogwon

Two beats. This is the same unwritten compound tensing seen in 물고기 and 열쇠 -- regular enough to expect but irregular enough that it has to be learned word by word.

Sound it out

yeo A glide straight into the flat ㅓ, one beat, with the lips relaxed.
gwon The plain ㄱ tenses to ㄲ because of the compound boundary: throat locked, no breath. Then a w-glide onto the unrounded ㅓ and a closing n.

Hear it in a sentence

여권을 보여 주세요 attaches 을, so the ㄴ moves forward and the noun becomes yeo-kkwo-neul. The verb 보여 then runs two vowels together with only a glide between them.

Where English speakers slip

Saying 'yeo-gwon' with a soft g is what the romanization invites and what almost every learner produces, when the consonant is tensed. Then the second block needs its lips to round for the glide and spread for the ㅓ, rather than staying rounded through the whole syllable.
