Farsi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "عصر" in Farsi?

Say "asr," one syllable ending in an s-r cluster with no vowel between them.

عصر /æsr/

asr

A one-syllable word, so no stress placement is needed, but note the unusual final "-sr" cluster, which doesn't occur in English word endings.

Sound it out

ع a light glottal onset (a tiny catch at the very front of the word) plus a short "a."
صر s + r run together with no vowel between them — "-sr."

Hear it in a sentence

عصر می‌بینمتان.

Asr mibinam-etān.

I'll see you in the afternoon.

Listen: عصر می‌بینمتان.

"عصر می‌بینمتان" (Asr mibinam-etān) means "I'll see you in the afternoon," built the same way as فردا می‌بینمتان — the object pronoun -etān ("you," formal) is suffixed directly onto the verb می‌بینم rather than appearing as a separate word.

Where English speakers slip

Resist the urge to insert a vowel to break up the -sr cluster at the end (something like "as-er") — native speakers run the s and r together. Also, this same word عصر can mean either "afternoon" or, in other contexts, "era/age" — context makes the meaning clear.
