Farsi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "بعد" in Farsi?

Say "ba'd," one syllable with a tiny throat-catch between the a and the d.

بعد /bæʔd/

ba'd

A one-syllable word, so no stress placement is needed, but don't skip the glottal stop before the final d — it's a real, audible catch in the throat.

Sound it out

بع b + a glottal stop (a tiny throat-catch, like the pause in "uh-oh") + a short "a" — "ba'-."
د d, closing the word.

Hear it in a sentence

بعد از کار به خانه می‌روم.

Ba'd az kār be khāne miravam.

I go home after work.

Listen: بعد از کار به خانه می‌روم.

"بعد از کار به خانه می‌روم" (Ba'd az kār be khāne miravam) means "I go home after work," the mirror image of قبل از ("before") — بعد از together means "after." به خانه ("to home") uses the preposition به before می‌روم ("I go").

Where English speakers slip

Like قبل, بعد normally needs its partner از to mean "after [something]" — بعد by itself just means "after/later" in a general sense. Don't drop the glottal stop before the final d either; skipping it can make بعد sound like a different, unrelated syllable.
