Farsi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "کجا" in Farsi?

Say "ko-JAH," with stress on the second syllable, which rhymes with "father."

کجا /koˈdʒɒː/

kojā

Stress falls on the final syllable, -jā ("place"), following the regular Persian pattern — کجا is literally "which place."

Sound it out

ک k + a short, unstressed "o" (like the o in "to").
جا j (like the j in "jam") + a long "ā" (father) — the stressed syllable, -JĀ, meaning "place."

Hear it in a sentence

کجا هستید؟

Kojā hastid?

Where are you?

"کجا هستید؟" (Kojā hastid?) means "Where are you?" The question word کجا simply fronts the sentence, and the verb هستید ("are," formal) sits at the end — standard Persian verb-final word order for questions too.

Where English speakers slip

Don't confuse کجا (where) with کی (who) or کِی (when) — they share the same initial ک sound but are otherwise distinct words with different vowels. Also remember Persian doesn't invert word order for questions the way English does ("are you" → "you are"); the verb just stays at the end.
