Farsi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "را" in Farsi?

Say "rah" with a tapped "r" and a long, open "ah" like in "father" — in fast casual speech it often shrinks to just "ro."

را /rɒː/

One syllable; in formal/written Persian it's said in full as rā, but colloquial Tehrani speech commonly reduces it to a quick, unstressed "ro."

Sound it out

ر A tapped "r," like Spanish "r" in "pero," not the English "r."
ا A long "ā" vowel, like "a" in "father."

Hear it in a sentence

کتاب را خواندم.

Ketāb rā khāndam.

I read the book.

"Ketāb rā khāndam" (کتاب را خواندم) places rā right after the definite direct object (ketāb, "the book") to mark it as the thing being acted on — English has no equivalent word here, since word order alone usually signals the object in English.

Where English speakers slip

Because English has nothing like rā, learners frequently either forget it entirely or misplace it before the noun instead of after — remember rā always comes immediately after the full object noun phrase, never before it, and only marks definite (specific, already-known) objects.
