Farsi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "شوهر" in Farsi?

Say "sho-HAR", rhyming the second syllable with "far" — unlike the kinship-stress words above, this one keeps the regular final-syllable stress.

شوهر /ʃo.hær/

shohar

شوهر is not part of the small first-syllable-stress exception group, so it follows the regular Persian pattern of stressing the final syllable.

Sound it out

ش English "sh" as in "shoe".
و A short "o" vowel here, like the "o" in "go" cut short, not a "w" sound.
ه ر A plain "h" plus a light tapped r, forming the stressed final syllable "-har".

Hear it in a sentence

شوهرش مهندس است.

Shohar-ash mohandes ast.

Her husband is an engineer.

"شوهرش مهندس است" ("Her husband is an engineer") attaches the possessive suffix -ash ("her/his") directly to شوهر, exactly as -am attaches for "my" — Persian possession is usually built with these suffixes rather than separate possessive words.

Where English speakers slip

Learners sometimes borrow the first-syllable stress pattern from مادر/پدر and say "SHO-har". شوهر is not in that exception group — keep the stress on the second syllable, sho-HAR.
