French · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "comme" in French?

kom — one syllable, a short open "o", and a real "m" at the end. Not nasal.

comme /kɔm/

One syllable. The word does several jobs — like, as, how — and the sound never changes: "comme ça", "comme tu veux", "comme c'est beau".

Sound it out

co A hard "k" plus a short open "o" as in "cot".
mme A single "m" sound. The doubling is what keeps the vowel oral rather than nasal — a single "m" there would have nasalized it, as in "nom".

Hear it in a sentence

Il est comme son père.

He's like his father.

"Il est comme son père" links the pronoun into the verb, /i.l‿ɛ/, and then uses "comme" for comparison without any extra word. "Père" has a grave accent marking an open "eh" and ends in a pronounced throat "r". Note that "son" is used for a masculine possessor's masculine noun — French possessives agree with the thing owned, not the owner.

Where English speakers slip

The doubled "mm" tempts learners into nasalizing, producing something like "kohm" through the nose. The vowel is fully oral and the "m" is a real consonant. English speakers also lengthen the vowel toward "comb"; keep it short and open, as in "cot". And do not confuse "comme" with "comment" — one means "like", the other "how".
