Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "आदमी" in Hindi?

AAD-mee — a long aa, a dental d with no vowel after it, then a long ee.

आदमी /aːd̪.miː/

aadmee

Schwa deletion creates the consonant cluster in the middle; spelled out letter by letter the word would have three beats, which nobody says. The two surviving syllables are similar in weight.

Sound it out

aad A long आ with no consonant onset, closed by a stop made on the teeth. The vowel written after द is deleted, which pushes the d straight against the m.
mee A bilabial m opening into a long tense ई. Two long vowels of very different qualities frame the word.

Hear it in a sentence

वह आदमी मेरे चाचा हैं।

Voh aadmee mere chaachaa haiṁ.

That man is my uncle.

"Voh aadmee mere chaachaa haiṁ" uses the plural haiṁ and mere as a mark of respect for an older relative, even though only one person is meant. Chaachaa has an unaspirated च twice over, so no air should escape at either point.

Where English speakers slip

Learners insert a vowel and say "aa-da-mee," restoring what schwa deletion removes. The d also lands on the alveolar ridge and often becomes a flap in American English, which in Hindi lands near ड़. Keep it a full dental stop pressed directly against the m.
