Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "और" in Hindi?

Closer to "or" than to "our" — a single long rounded vowel, then one flicked r.

और /ɔːɾ/

aur

One heavy syllable, but as a conjunction it usually sits unstressed between the items it joins, borrowing rhythm from them. Giving it a strong beat makes it sound contrastive, as if you were correcting someone.

Sound it out

au औ is steady and rounded, roughly the vowel of British "caught." There is no glide, so the mouth does not move during it.
r A brief tap at the end. Keep the vowel pure right up to the moment of contact rather than letting r-colouring bleed backwards.

Hear it in a sentence

चाय और पानी दीजिए।

Chaay aur paanee deejiye.

Tea and water, please.

"Chaay aur paanee deejiye" joins two nouns with no article and no plural marking, and the polite imperative deejiye carries the whole request. The two joined items happen to be feminine and masculine respectively, which makes no difference at all to aur.

Where English speakers slip

American English speakers turn the r into a full rhotic and the vowel into "ow," yielding something like "our." That is two errors, and the diphthong one is more damaging: standard Hindi औ does not move. Freeze the vowel, then tap once.
