Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "बैग" in Hindi?

bayg with the long open-mid vowel of "bed," not the shorter English vowel of "bag," and a g voiced to the end.

बैग /bɛːɡ/

baig

One syllable with a long vowel and a stop coda. Hindi has borrowed the word but lengthened its vowel to fit the native system, so the Hindi version is noticeably slower than the English one it comes from.

Sound it out

bai Plain voiced ब with ऐ, a single steady long vowel around the quality of "bed." Roman ai never means an English diphthong in standard Hindi.
g Unaspirated ग with the voicing running right through the closure; English half-devoices a word-final g.

Hear it in a sentence

मैं बैग घर पर भूल गया।

Maiṁ baig ghar par bhool gayaa.

I left the bag at home.

"Maiṁ baig ghar par bhool gayaa" uses the compound bhool gayaa for a completed forgetting, and bhool opens with the breathy-voiced भ. Baig's plain ब right before ghar's breathy घ makes a useful comparison of the two.

Where English speakers slip

Import the English word and the vowel comes out shorter and lower while the final consonant devoices. Lengthen the vowel to match Hindi's ऐ and keep the g buzzing until you release. Adding breathiness to the b would move it into the भ series.
