Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "बेटी" in Hindi?

BAY-ṭee — same retroflex ṭ as beṭaa, but ending in a long ee that marks the feminine.

बेटी /beː.ʈiː/

beṭee

Since only the final vowel separates this word from beṭaa, that vowel has to be fully long and clearly front. An English-style reduction there would leave the gender ambiguous.

Sound it out

be Plain voiced ब with a long steady ए; no breathiness on the b, which would make it भ.
ṭee The retroflex stop again — tongue tip curled back — released into a long tense ई instead of the aa of beṭaa.

Hear it in a sentence

उनकी बेटी डॉक्टरी की पढ़ाई करती है।

Unkee beṭee ḍokṭaree kee paṛhaaee kartee hai.

His daughter studies medicine.

"Unkee beṭee ḍokṭaree kee paṛhaaee kartee hai" chains three feminine agreements — unkee, kee, kartee — around the daughter, and ḍokṭaree itself has two retroflex stops. Paṛhaaee then adds the breathy retroflex flap ढ़, so the sentence is dense with curled-tongue sounds.

Where English speakers slip

Learners produce an alveolar t and shorten the final vowel, which erases both the retroflexion and the feminine marking at once. Curl the tongue back for the stop and hold the ee for the same length as the e in the first syllable.
