Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "चीज़" in Hindi?

cheez — like English "cheese" but with an unaspirated ch and a genuine buzzing z at the end.

चीज़ /tʃiːz/

cheez

One heavy syllable, long vowel plus a voiced coda; there is no accent question, only the requirement that the vowel not be shortened and the final z stay voiced right through rather than devoicing to s at the end.

Sound it out

ch च is made a little further forward than English ch and released with no breath at all — a dry, compact affricate.
ee Long tense ई, the one part of the word English gets free.
z ज़ with its nuqta: a voiced fricative, not the affricate j. Persian-derived vocabulary depends on this distinction.

Hear it in a sentence

यह चीज़ क्या है?

Yeh cheez kyaa hai?

"Yeh cheez kyaa hai?" puts cheez between two words with य glides — yeh and kyaa — so the tongue is at the palate three times in four syllables. The affricate in cheez should be crisper and more closed than those glides.

Where English speakers slip

English ch carries a small puff of air that Hindi च does not, so "cheese" said naturally sits between च and छ. The other risk is devoicing the final consonant, since English speakers routinely half-devoice word-final z; keep the voicing on until the sound stops.
