Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "घर" in Hindi?

ghur — the gh is a single breathy-voiced sound, a g released with a warm sigh.

घर /ɡʱəɾ/

ghar

A single short syllable closed by a tap, so the word is very brief — but the breathy onset adds audible time at the front, which is where all its substance lies. It should never sound like two beats.

Sound it out

gh Voicing and aspiration arrive together: the back of the tongue closes with the folds already buzzing, and breath rushes out at release. One sound, not g plus h.
ar A bare schwa followed by a single tap. The vowel takes no colouring from the r.

Hear it in a sentence

मैं घर जा रहा हूँ।

Maiṁ ghar jaa rahaa hooṁ.

I am going home.

"Maiṁ ghar jaa rahaa hooṁ" leaves ghar without any postposition, which is standard for destinations with jaanaa. The sentence therefore moves from a breathy velar straight into ज, an unaspirated affricate — voiced in both cases but breathy in only one.

Where English speakers slip

Nearly every learner produces a plain g, giving "gur," which loses the feature entirely. Breathy voice needs building from scratch: keep the vocal folds vibrating through the closure and push extra air out as you release, letting it bleed into the vowel. An American r at the end is the second habit to lose.
