kaam — a completely dry k and a long open aa closed by m.
kaam
Because this word appears in dozens of compounds with karnaa, keeping its vowel long even in fast phrases is a habit that pays off repeatedly. The whole syllable is that one vowel.

"Aaj bahut kaam hai" has no subject beyond kaam itself — the sentence simply asserts that work exists — and bahut contracts heavily in speech. That leaves aaj and kaam as the two fully articulated long vowels.
Aspirating the k is the main leak, and shortening the vowel toward English "calm" without the l is the second. Test the puff with a hand in front of your mouth, and give the vowel the same length you would give the aa in aap.
