Hindi · Pronunciation Guide
khu-LAA — puff after the k, a short lax u, and a long aa at the end.
khulaa
The vowel contrast is sharp — short then long — so the word tips decisively toward its ending. The aspiration at the front is the only thing that gives the first syllable any bulk, and once you remove the puff the word sounds oddly truncated.

"Dukaan khulee hai" uses the feminine khulee, because dukaan is a feminine noun, so the final vowel changes from aa to ee. Dukaan opens with a dental द and closes with a dental न, so the tongue tip sits on the teeth at both ends of the noun.
Learners lengthen the u toward "khoo" and drop the aspiration, giving something like "koolaa." Both vowels have to keep their length distinction — short then long — and the k needs its breath. Test the puff with a hand in front of your mouth.
