Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "मेरा" in Hindi?

MAY-raa, both vowels long, and the r is one quick tap of the tongue tip.

मेरा /meː.ɾaː/

meraa

Two heavy syllables of near-equal length; Hindi lets them balance rather than picking a winner. What matters more than accent placement is refusing to reduce either vowel to a schwa, which is what English rhythm would do to an unstressed syllable.

Sound it out

me A pure long e with no upward glide — English speakers habitually diphthongise this vowel and it needs to stay flat.
raa Tap र once against the alveolar ridge and open into a long aa. No lip rounding, no tongue bunching.

Hear it in a sentence

यह मेरा घर है।

Yeh meraa ghar hai.

This is my house.

"Yeh meraa ghar hai" pairs meraa with the masculine ghar, and that -aa ending is agreement, not decoration; with a feminine noun it becomes meree. The sentence also gives you ghar's breathy-voiced gh right after a long aa, a good place to hear the contrast.

Where English speakers slip

Two things drift. The first vowel gets an English "ay" glide, and the r gets an American colouring that swallows the vowel around it. Keep the tongue tip loose and flick it once — if you can hear r for more than an instant, it is too long.
