Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "पार्क" in Hindi?

paark with a dry unaspirated p, a long open aa, and a tapped r before the k.

पार्क /paːɾk/

paark

English speakers hear their own word and give the r as much time as the vowel, which doubles the syllable's apparent weight. In Hindi the vowel holds everything and the -rk cluster passes in an instant.

Sound it out

p प with no puff at all; English initial p before a stressed vowel always releases air, and that air belongs to फ.
aar A long open आ followed by a single flick of the tongue tip. The vowel must not take on r-colouring.
k Unaspirated क closing the word, released quietly. The -rk cluster has no vowel in it.

Hear it in a sentence

हम हर सुबह पार्क में दौड़ते हैं।

Ham har subah paark meṁ dauṛte haiṁ.

We run in the park every morning.

"Ham har subah paark meṁ dauṛte haiṁ" attaches meṁ to paark and uses dauṛte, which contains ड़, the retroflex flap, plus the rounded औ vowel. Har and paark both have taps, so there are three r-type sounds in the sentence with two different articulations.

Where English speakers slip

The English word supplies an aspirated p and a long rhotic. Both need replacing: build the word from the p of "spa," hold the aa clean, then tap once before the k. If you can hear the r as a separate long sound, it is too long.
