Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "सात" in Hindi?

saat with a long aa and a dental t — closer to "saath" in tongue position than to English "sot."

सात /saːt̪/

saat

Heavy monosyllable; the long vowel is the whole rhythmic story. Notice that Hindi numerals cycle between long-vowel shapes like saat and short-vowel ones like das, and preserving that alternation is what makes counting sound right.

Sound it out

saa Plain s and a long open aa; nothing exotic, but the vowel must be genuinely long, not the clipped a of "sat."
t Dental त, tongue on the teeth, unreleased or lightly released with no puff. Contrast it with the retroflex ट in aaṭh, the next number up.

Hear it in a sentence

सात दिन में एक हफ़्ता होता है।

Saat din meṁ ek haftaa hotaa hai.

There are seven days in a week.

"Saat din meṁ ek haftaa hotaa hai" is a generic statement, which is why it uses hotaa hai rather than plain hai — a habitual, definitional present. Haftaa has a nuqta f from Persian, so it is a true f, not an aspirated p.

Where English speakers slip

English speakers put the tongue on the alveolar ridge and often release the t audibly, which drags the word toward retroflex ट. Since ट and त distinguish real words, this is worth drilling: say saat and aaṭh back to back and feel the tongue tip travel from the teeth to the roof of the mouth.
