Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "सच" in Hindi?

such — a bare schwa and an unaspirated ch that releases with no air at all.

सच /sətʃ/

sach

A short vowel closed by an affricate: heavy by position, brief in real time. It should be one of the quickest words in any sentence containing it, and lengthening the vowel is the usual way learners inflate it.

Sound it out

sa s plus the inherent vowel, which here is a genuine schwa rather than the fuller vowel English would supply.
ch च is made slightly further forward than English ch, with the tongue blade against the hard palate, and released completely dry.

Hear it in a sentence

यह सच नहीं है।

Yeh sach naheeṁ hai.

It's not true.

"Yeh sach naheeṁ hai" contrasts a fully oral word with naheeṁ's nasalized ending, so the pair makes a clean listening exercise. Sach also has no gender marking at all, which is why the sentence needs no agreement adjustment.

Where English speakers slip

English ch carries a small puff of air, and that puff nudges च toward छ, which is a different consonant. The vowel is the other issue: the roman a invites "sahch," but the inherent vowel is a neutral schwa, closer to the vowel in "such."
