Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "शिक्षक" in Hindi?

shik-SHUK — the conjunct क्ष is a k followed by a retroflex sh, with the tongue tip curled back.

शिक्षक /ʃɪk.ʂək/

shikṣak

Bulk comes entirely from the Sanskrit-derived conjunct in the middle rather than from anything the vowels contribute. Both are short, so the word moves quickly.

Sound it out

shi श as in English "ship," with a short lax इ after it.
kṣ क्ष joins क to ष, a retroflex fricative made with the tongue tip curled back. In everyday speech it usually comes out close to the sh of श, but the k before it stays audible.
ak A bare schwa closed by a dry velar stop, released quietly or not at all.

Hear it in a sentence

"Hamaare shikṣak bahut achchhe haiṁ" uses hamaare and achchhe in the plural as honorifics for a teacher, even for one person. Achchhe's geminated affricate with an aspirated release is a second consonant cluster in the same clause.

Where English speakers slip

Learners either drop the k and say "shishak" or insert a vowel and say "shik-shak" with two full syllables. Keep the k audible and let the fricative follow immediately. The two sh-type sounds in the word are also slightly different, the second being made further back.
