Hindi · Pronunciation Guide

How do you pronounce "ज़्यादा" in Hindi?

ZYAA-daa — start with a z and glide straight into y, no vowel between them, and the d is dental.

ज़्यादा /zjaː.d̪aː/

zyaadaa

Two heavy syllables, both with long vowels, giving a steady two-beat word. The consonant cluster at the front adds no extra syllable, so anyone hearing three beats is inserting a vowel that should not be there.

Sound it out

zy The nuqta on ज़ makes it z, and य follows immediately as a glide. English has no zy- onset, so this cluster needs deliberate practice.
aa Long open आ carrying the first syllable's weight.
daa Dental द — tongue tip on the upper teeth — opening into a second long aa.

Hear it in a sentence

मुझे ज़्यादा समय चाहिए।

Mujhe zyaadaa samay chaahiye.

I need more time.

"Mujhe zyaadaa samay chaahiye" pairs the quantifier with samay, which is masculine and stays unmarked, and the whole thing runs on the dative-plus-chaahiye pattern. Samay ends in a य glide, so the phrase has two य sounds in close succession — one in a cluster, one as a coda.

Where English speakers slip

The predictable repair is inserting a vowel: "zi-yaa-daa" or "jyaa-daa." Both are wrong in different ways — the first adds a syllable, the second ignores the nuqta and substitutes j. Practise by saying "is your" quickly and isolating the zy, then attach the long aa.
